What’s the story with this sleepy-looking town? Well, in the summer, locals pack up shop and the kids, and either head to the countryside (yes, 20 minutes up the road) or down to the coast (yep, 15 minutes away) to retreat in their summer homes. The town seems silent but in reality, every year more people choose to stay at home, especially with the continuous opening of new kitchens and concept spaces led by young chefs.

Pentole e Provette

Siena-born chef Luca Trabalzini started his culinary career at the age of 15 with a passion for cooking that took him all the way to Australia, where he acquired innovative cooking techniques and brought them back home, here to Fasano. The experience that awaits at this Gastro-Bistro is full of great surprises – definitely for those who enjoy the unexpected. Chef Trabalzini defines his cuisine as ‘pop’ and there is definitely a culinary dance going on here, between hot and cold, salty and sweet, crunchy, and creamy. Trabalzini was a finalist in last year’s Chef Awards 2019 in Assisi – the first-ever to come from Fasano. The menu changes according to seasonal ingredients and is wonderfully paired with lesser-known labels; you may be lucky enough to have the beef cheek with rice crispies and beetroot available as well as the tartare on an ice cream stick, the light-as-air Parmigiana, and the popcorn and caramel panna cotta.

Al Palazzo

Al Palazzo is all about mixing origins with something new, adding value, and respect to the earth by using raw materials with passion and offering love and respect to this beautiful land. Two seating options include in the former barn house now converted into a cozy dining lounge, or outdoors amid the rows of citrus trees in a line-up of tables that is always ready for a festive dining experience with friends. The chef prepares exquisite lemon linguine with fresh shrimp and Stracciatella cheese as well as excellent pan-fried salmon. Additional favorites include mixed fried fish and there is an impressive selection of health-conscious dishes that all change every season. Booking recommended.

Fuori Menu

Fuori Menu is a new kitchen in town with charming interiors and creative dishes created by Chef Giuseppe who uses fresh produce from the land and sea to create a seasonal menu revisiting traditional cooking with unconventional ingredients from Puglia, accompanied by an impressive range of wine. Our favorites including homemade pasta and meat. Dessert? Try the pistachio pie.

Caffe Bella Napoli

Besides its coffee and impressive line of fresh pastries, this central cafe run by Donato (co-owner of the new MOSS wines), also offers a lunch and dinner menu surrounded by bottles of hand-selected vino across the region. The kitchen offers classic recipes and seasonal specials with interesting interpretations. Book the back cellar room, ideal for maximum 6 people.

Basket weavers, textile producers, and master tail Basket weavers, textile producers, and master tailors have worked in Puglia for centuries, if not more. Tireless workers, young trainees and women alike took to the looms, weaved under the trees in a shaded yard, or in the kitchen between meal preparations to create fishing nets, baskets, detailed embroidery, and linens for the home.

Over time, Puglia became a hub for tailoring factories and while many of these have disappeared in the face of economic strife and competitive production costs the region’s craft making traditions are making a major comeback thanks to young entrepreneurial artisans and cooperatives that are empowering locals to uphold the ancient trade of ‘handmade in Puglia', sharing yet another facet of fine Italian craftsmanship with the world.

Today, we’re sharing the story of a lesser known Today, we’re sharing the story of a lesser known town just minutes from the Baroque capital: Welcome to Monteroni di Lecce.

It is believed that the name Monteroni comes from the Latin Mons Tyronum (Mount of the Spear-Men), the possible location of a Roman training camp. Archaeological findings suggest that Monteroni was also the location of a military stronghold, with coins of the Roman era found here.

Frederick II granted fiefdom to the Montoroni family somewhere between the 14th and 15th centuries, there they built the first Baronial Palace in the shape of a small fortress - one of the biggest in the province of Lecce.

You can visit it today, along with additional sites including the bell tower and two chapels, designed in the Leccese Baroque style. The town’s prestigious status is evident in the majestic villas peppered along the roads and recognized by the Italian Botanical Heritage association.

You can also visit: Villa Carelli Palombi, Casina Andretta, Villa de Giorgi, and Villa Grassi.

La Cialledda, also known locally as ‘Acquasale’, is a very traditional dish in Puglia and Basilicata that uses ‘yesterday’s bread’ or crumbled friselle, softened by the juices of fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, sprinkled with olive oil and topped with red onions and fresh basil.

It’s fresh, crunchy and delicious in its simplicity.

Reminds us of the Lebanese ‘Fattoush’, doesn’t it?
