Unbeknownst to many, Puglia has always been a go-to for prestigious tailoring and flawless handmade expertise. While tailoring hubs have shifted to other parts of the world, the historic craft and interest have never ceased, with a handful of exceptionally skilled artisans at work.

Tucked in the Murge Plateau between the Apulian towns of Taranto and Matera is the historic village of Ginosa. Besides the wealth of landmarks and the gravine—or ravines—that the town offers, it is home to a little sartorial secret: G. Inglese.

The history of the antique tailor begins in the early 1950s when the wife of Giovanni Inglese (the brand’s namesake) hand-made suits for Italy-bound men. Their grandson, Angelo, inherited the business and today their savoir-faire continues to thrive under the name of Barròco Italia, an e-commerce platform that he founded in 2018 with the intention to transform and innovate the business models of Italian craftsmen.

Among the tailoring brand’s clients are some of the most celebrated personalities across the globe – Angelo Inglese and his staff of tailors are behind the famous dress shirt for Prince William’s wedding day, as well as for various U.S. presidents.

The brand upholds tradition and artisanship to the highest regard and in 2000 Angelo purchased an entire historic palazzo in Ginosa’s city center to “strengthen the business-territory relationship”. In this sense, G. Inglese has infused sartorial tourism into the city’s identity, inspiring visitors to come here – not Milan, Paris, or London – for the richness of fashion. The tones of the Apulian territory greatly influence the brand’s tailoring style, along with its iconic colors such as brushed beige, limestone white, and denim blues.

Each G. Inglese shirt is handmade down to the last stitch, comprising almost thirty hours of work: twenty-five steps, three tests, a silk filament, skillful technicality, and competitive manual applications. Barròco Italia sells prêt-à-porter items by G. Inglese along with a myriad of handpicked artisans across Italy.

Basket weavers, textile producers, and master tail Basket weavers, textile producers, and master tailors have worked in Puglia for centuries, if not more. Tireless workers, young trainees and women alike took to the looms, weaved under the trees in a shaded yard, or in the kitchen between meal preparations to create fishing nets, baskets, detailed embroidery, and linens for the home.

Over time, Puglia became a hub for tailoring factories and while many of these have disappeared in the face of economic strife and competitive production costs the region’s craft making traditions are making a major comeback thanks to young entrepreneurial artisans and cooperatives that are empowering locals to uphold the ancient trade of ‘handmade in Puglia', sharing yet another facet of fine Italian craftsmanship with the world.

Today, we’re sharing the story of a lesser known Today, we’re sharing the story of a lesser known town just minutes from the Baroque capital: Welcome to Monteroni di Lecce.

It is believed that the name Monteroni comes from the Latin Mons Tyronum (Mount of the Spear-Men), the possible location of a Roman training camp. Archaeological findings suggest that Monteroni was also the location of a military stronghold, with coins of the Roman era found here.

Frederick II granted fiefdom to the Montoroni family somewhere between the 14th and 15th centuries, there they built the first Baronial Palace in the shape of a small fortress - one of the biggest in the province of Lecce.

You can visit it today, along with additional sites including the bell tower and two chapels, designed in the Leccese Baroque style. The town’s prestigious status is evident in the majestic villas peppered along the roads and recognized by the Italian Botanical Heritage association.

You can also visit: Villa Carelli Palombi, Casina Andretta, Villa de Giorgi, and Villa Grassi.

La Cialledda, also known locally as ‘Acquasale’, is a very traditional dish in Puglia and Basilicata that uses ‘yesterday’s bread’ or crumbled friselle, softened by the juices of fresh tomatoes and cucumbers, sprinkled with olive oil and topped with red onions and fresh basil.

It’s fresh, crunchy and delicious in its simplicity.

Reminds us of the Lebanese ‘Fattoush’, doesn’t it?
